Cenozoic marine fossils, namely marine mollusk shells of the northern high latitudes provide rich evidence of past climate and evolutionary changes. Alaskan fossils are mostly found in remote places that are not visited by geologists or fossil collectors frequently. Several localities in Alaska, visited over several years collecting material for multiple research projects produced a rich fossil assemblage from a variety of ancient marine environments. From the timing of the first opening of the Bering Strait to the climate warming in the Middle Miocene, mollusks survived and diversified in the cold seas around Alaska.
