Fossil Windfall
at Antarctica’s Edge
Presented by
Anton Oleinek
A small island off the coast of Antarctic Peninsula, free of a permanent ice cap and devoid of vegetation. A 100% geologic exposure of the late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary marine fossiliferous sedimentary rocks. The interval of geologic time spans from the Latest Cretaceous to earliest Oligocene. Rocks are loosely consolidated and contain a variety of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils. Fossils are nearly perfectly preserved in most cases. Study of these fossils presents an interesting picture of the life on the “southern icy continent” before it became truly icebound.
