OCTOBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING

October 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

STUDYING MARINE MICRO-FOSSILS in North Dakota
presented by CARSON CIESINSKI

FAU Doctoral Student
and winner of a 2024 GMSPB Merit Scholarship
Carson is in the process of creating an inventory of marine microfossils from a well-known fossil site in southwestern North Dakota. This work has great implications for our modern understanding of the Cretaceous mass extinction, which happens to be the same event that led all non-avian dinosaurs
to go extinct around 66 million years ago.

The precise focus of his work is on the taphonomy, or preservation state, of foraminifera samples taken from the site. These incredibly well-preserved samples grant him the opportunity to make inferences about their ecology and deposition that had not yet been possible in the formation they come from. These will then be used to make inferences about the paleogeography and paleoecology of the Western Interior Seaway at the end-Cretaceous.

His main mode of documentation is Scanning Electron Microscopy.
